This week, representatives from Huron County’s 10 municipalities attended the annual Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) Conference, joining leaders from across rural Ontario to tackle issues critical to rural communities. With over two dozen staff and elected officials representing the county’s municipalities, this “Team Huron” showed incredible dedication by highlighting our region’s unique challenges and collaborating with our rural neighbours on shared concerns.
The ROMA Conference is a cornerstone event for rural municipalities, offering learning opportunities, advocacy sessions, and direct engagement with provincial leaders. From attending educational workshops to participating in delegation meetings, Huron County’s representatives have ensured that the voices of our residents are heard loud and clear.

Advocacy and Collaboration at the Forefront
Key speakers included Huron-Bruce MPP and Minister of Rural Affairs Lisa Thompson, Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma, and leaders from Ontario’s political parties, emphasizing the province’s commitment to rural Ontario. Delegation meetings provided municipal representatives the opportunity to advocate directly on issues such as infrastructure funding, mental health supports, and energy procurement.
Celebrating the Spirit of Rural Ontario
This year’s conference, themed Rural Routes, celebrated the unique contributions of rural municipalities while addressing the pressing challenges they face. Educational programming, expert panels, and keynotes all brought a rural perspective to the forefront, underscoring the importance of collective action and strong leadership.
