The Huron Chamber of Commerce was invited to join other local economic development stakeholders in Clinton this week for the official launch of the Province’s new Rural Ontario Development Program — a major funding commitment that will help rural communities grow and succeed. Ontario’s Minister of Rural Affairs, Lisa Thompson, made the announcement at the REACH Centre alongside MPP Matthew Rae, MPP Bob Bailey, Huron County Warden Jamie Heffer, and Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn. Also on hand were representatives from economic development organizations from Huron County and across Ontario.
Key highlights from the announcement:
- New direct funding for small businesses: For the first time, rural brick-and-mortar businesses with 1 to 20 employees can apply directly for funding to support growth, upgrades and local job creation.
- Support for local economic planning: Municipalities and community organizations can now apply for funding to create or update local economic development strategies, feasibility studies and other groundwork that help secure larger projects in future.
- Predictable application windows: The program will have two defined intakes each year, making it easier to plan ahead. The first intake opened this week and will run for three months. Local support available: Dedicated ministry field staff will offer webinars, one-on-one advice and application coaching to help businesses and organizations prepare strong proposals that match funding priorities.
Colin Carmichael, Executive Director of the Huron Chamber of Commerce, attended the announcement and says the program will have an impact in Huron County.
“This program finally recognizes what small rural businesses need — practical funding and straightforward support to grow and create local jobs. Combined with more help for municipalities to plan future development, this is good news for everyone working to build a strong rural economy here in Huron County.”
The Chamber encourages local businesses, community groups and municipalities to learn more about the new funding streams and start preparing applications now.
