Protecting Local Prosperity: The Canada-U.S. Trade Tracker and the Threat of Tariffs
The Canada-U.S. trade relationship is essential to businesses and communities across Canada, including right here in Huron County. With the inauguration of a new U.S. administration under Donald Trump, threats to this relationship—such as a proposed 25% tariff on Canadian goods—pose significant challenges. To help businesses understand the potential impacts and advocate for free trade, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce has launched the Canada-U.S. Trade Tracker.
What’s at Stake for Huron County?
Every day, $3.6 billion in goods crosses the Canada-U.S. border, fueling an annual trade relationship worth $1.3 trillion. Locally, many Huron County businesses, particularly those in agriculture, manufacturing, and energy, depend on seamless cross-border trade. These industries are the backbone of our regional economy, supporting jobs, families, and communities.
The proposed tariffs could disrupt this critical relationship, increasing costs for businesses and households. For Canadians, this could mean an average annual income loss of $1,900 CAD per person. Beyond dollars and cents, tariffs threaten industries like agriculture—one of Huron County’s largest economic drivers—by making goods less competitive in the U.S. market.
A Tool to Advocate for Free Trade

The Canada-U.S. Trade Tracker is an interactive tool developed by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s Business Data Lab. It provides real-time insights into trade flows, key industries, and the economic ties between Canada and the U.S. By offering provincial-level data, it highlights the importance of this relationship for Ontario and, by extension, Huron County.
For example:
- Ontario’s top export to the U.S. is autos and parts, primarily to Michigan. While Huron County may not manufacture cars, the economic ripple effects of tariffs on the auto industry could be felt across the province.
- Agriculture exports, like grains and oilseeds, are essential to Huron County’s economy. With tariffs, the cost of these goods could rise, impacting local farmers and agribusinesses.
Why This Matters to Huron County Businesses
In Huron County, the integration between Canadian and American economies is evident. From the machinery used on local farms to raw materials that support manufacturing, our businesses rely on affordable cross-border trade. The Trade Tracker allows local businesses to explore specific trade relationships and understand the potential impacts of policy changes on their industries.
This tool equips businesses, policymakers, and stakeholders with the data they need to advocate for free trade and counter the economic risks of tariffs. It also shows how important Canada is to the U.S., with Canada as the #1 customer for 34 American states, including many tied to Ontario’s industries.
Take Action
As a Chamber, we urge Huron County businesses to explore the Canada-U.S. Trade Tracker and use it to better understand the local and national stakes. With 2.3 million Canadian jobs tied to U.S. exports, including many here in Ontario, ensuring strong cross-border trade is essential to our community’s economic success.
