The Huron Chamber of Commerce strongly condemns the U.S. administration’s decision to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods. This reckless move will have severe consequences for businesses, workers, and consumers on both sides of the border, with particularly devastating effects on Huron County’s manufacturing and agriculture sectors.

Impact on Huron County

“Our local economy is deeply tied to cross-border trade, and these tariffs threaten the livelihoods of businesses and workers right here in Huron County,” said Colin Carmichael, Executive Director of the Huron Chamber of Commerce. “Manufacturers, farmers, and agri-businesses throughout our region will feel the immediate effects of these tariffs, and the ripple effect will be significant. We need swift action from all levels of government to mitigate the damage and support our local businesses through this crisis.”

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) has also condemned the tariffs, calling them “reckless and harmful to both economies.” OCC President and CEO Daniel Tisch emphasized that this trade war “will mean higher prices, lost jobs and investment, and struggling businesses on both sides of the border.” The OCC has urged both provincial and federal governments to take immediate action to protect investment and support businesses.

Similarly, Canadian Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Candace Laing warned that the U.S. government’s decision “disregards decades of success and trillions in trade,” and will lead to “job losses and economic disaster.” The Canadian Chamber is calling for transformational action to strengthen Canada’s trade resilience.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) has reported that prior to these tariffs, one-third of small agri-businesses were already experiencing higher costs due to trade tensions, with many delaying expansion plans. These challenges will now escalate rapidly.

Chamber Action: A Local Task Force

In response, the Huron Chamber of Commerce is spearheading the creation of a local task force to coordinate information, response, and support for businesses within Huron County. This task force will bring together local business organizations, industry associations, and municipal leaders to ensure our business community has access to the information, resources, and advocacy they need during this trade crisis. More details on this initiative will be announced in the coming days.

Advocacy and Next Steps

The Chamber calls on all levels of government to act decisively in response to these tariffs. As assistance programs and trade mitigation measures are developed, the Huron Chamber will ensure businesses in our region are informed and have access to available support.

“We stand with our manufacturers, farmers, and local businesses as they navigate this challenge,” added Carmichael. “We are committed to ensuring Huron County remains strong, competitive, and supported through this period of uncertainty.”
