The Huron Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the launch of the Ontario Business & Trade Leadership Coalition (OBTLC), a bold new initiative by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) to address the challenges of rising global protectionism and the looming threat of U.S. tariffs. This Coalition unites influential leaders from Ontario’s most trade-dependent sectors, including Bruce Power, a valued member of the Huron Chamber of Commerce, to champion solutions that protect and grow Ontario’s economy.
The OBTLC aims to equip businesses across the province with sector-specific tools and strategies to navigate today’s volatile trade environment. Through proactive advocacy and evidence-based recommendations, the Coalition seeks to mitigate risks, foster resilience, and maintain Ontario’s global competitiveness.
Daniel Tisch, President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the urgency of the initiative: “President Trump has claimed the U.S. doesn’t need Canada – but we are here to show just how invaluable we are. The Ontario Business & Trade Leadership Coalition represents a united response – a coalition of industry leaders committed to resilience, collaboration, and growth.”
The Coalition’s members include leaders from key industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, energy, and transportation. Among them is Bruce Power’s Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice-President James Scongack, whose involvement reinforces the importance of Huron Chamber members in shaping provincial and international trade policies.
Colin Carmichael, Executive Director of the Huron Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the initiative’s relevance to local businesses and the broader Ontario economy: “The Ontario Business & Trade Leadership Coalition couldn’t come at a more critical time. As businesses in Huron County and across the province contend with the uncertainty of an extended trade war with the United States, this Coalition represents the united strength of Ontario’s business community. Preparing for these challenges is not just necessary – it’s essential to securing long-term economic stability and growth.”
The OBTLC’s commitment to action resonates strongly in Huron County, where trade-dependent sectors like agriculture, energy, and manufacturing are integral to the local economy. Through its collaboration with cross-border chambers and all levels of government, the Coalition is set to deliver practical solutions that benefit both local communities and the province at large.
The Huron Chamber of Commerce looks forward to supporting this vital initiative and ensuring Huron County’s voice is heard in the ongoing efforts to safeguard Ontario’s economic future.
