The Huron Marine & Economic Forum returns to Goderich this October, bringing together leaders from marine transportation, ports, rail, energy, agriculture, manufacturing, trade and economic development to explore the role the Great Lakes transportation system plays in Ontario’s economy.

Hosted by the Huron Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Goderich Port Management Corporation, the 2026 Forum expands the conversation beyond the waterfront. From farms and manufacturers to energy projects, rail corridors and international markets, the program will examine how marine infrastructure connects inland communities and businesses to the broader Canadian and global economy.

The main forum takes place Thursday, October 15, from 9 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m. at the Goderich Columbus Convention Centre.

Welcome Reception | October 14

Forum participants are also invited to join us the evening before for a welcome reception at Beach Street Station in Goderich.

Wednesday, October 14

The reception will provide an informal opportunity to meet fellow participants, speakers and industry leaders before the main program begins Thursday morning.

Main Forum | October 15

Panel 1: Infrastructure and Corridor Capacity

Canada’s ports are only one part of the transportation network required to move goods efficiently. This discussion will examine the infrastructure needed to move more, and different kinds of, cargo through the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence system.

Topics will include port capacity, intermodal connections, rail and road infrastructure, containerization, customs and border considerations, corridor utilization, operating constraints and the economic consequences of underinvestment.

Moderator:
Steve Salmons, Windsor Port Authority

Panelists:

  • Captain Satinder Singh, Toronto Port Authority
  • Neil Johnson, GIO Rail
  • John Grech, Picton Terminals
  • Jason Card, Chamber of Marine Commerce

Panel 2: Economic Impact and Market Access

The second panel turns the discussion inland, looking at how marine transportation and related infrastructure support economic activity far beyond the shoreline.

The conversation will explore agriculture, food and processing capacity, energy, manufacturing, logistics, investment, supply-chain resilience, export opportunities and access to domestic and international markets.

Moderator:
Dave Shorey, Georgian College

Panelists:

  • Chad Richards, Bruce Power
  • Darryl Markle, Parrish & Heimbecker
  • Chris Watson, Huron County Economic Development
  • Mikenna Richardson, Peacock Tariff Consulting

Provincial Government Discussion

The Forum will also feature a dedicated discussion with representatives of the Ontario government, providing an opportunity to connect the day’s conversations about infrastructure, trade, workforce and economic development with provincial priorities.

Ontario cabinet representation is confirmed, with additional details to be announced as ministerial schedules and participation are finalized.

More Than a Marine Industry Conversation

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence system connects communities across Ontario with markets throughout Canada, the United States and overseas. The infrastructure that makes that possible also affects the competitiveness of farms, manufacturers, energy producers and other businesses throughout the province.

With Canadian businesses navigating changing trade relationships, increased attention to supply-chain resilience and a renewed focus on diversifying markets, the 2026 Huron Marine & Economic Forum will bring together perspectives from across that interconnected system.

The program will also include updates from the Huron Chamber of Commerce and Goderich Port Management Corporation, along with opportunities to connect with speakers and other attendees throughout the day.
