As part of our ongoing commitment to the well-being of our community, the Huron Chamber of Commerce is proud to highlight an upcoming initiative by one of our members, the Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health (CERH). Gateway CERH is offering a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course on May 16th at the Kingsbridge Centre. This training is a prime opportunity for businesses within and beyond our Chamber community to foster a supportive environment for mental health.

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid serves as critical support for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis, akin to physical first aid. The course, facilitated by trained professionals from our local community, teaches participants to identify symptoms, offer initial help, and guide those in need towards appropriate resources. This proactive approach can significantly impact the management of mental health crises and contribute to healthier communities.

Why MHFA Training is Crucial for Your Business

In Canada, one in three individuals will encounter mental health challenges in their lifetime, highlighting a vital need for awareness and intervention skills across all sectors. MHFA training equips participants with the tools to:

  • Recognize early signs of mental health issues.
  • Initiate conversations that encourage individuals to discuss their mental state.
  • Assist effectively during mental health or substance use crises.
  • Maintain personal mental wellness.
  • Navigate community mental health resources.

Such training is invaluable, not just for mental health professionals but for anyone. It fosters a safer, more understanding workplace and community.

Who Benefits from MHFA?

This training is universally beneficial, from enhancing psychological health and safety in workplaces to empowering educators and community leaders. Over 30,000 Canadians have already benefited from this program, and now, our Chamber members have the chance to join this growing community of informed supporters.

Course Structure and Enrollment Details

The MHFA course comprises:

  • Module 1: A self-directed online module that participants complete on their own time.
  • Modules 2 and 3: These are conducted in person, involving 7 hours in the classroom and an additional 2 hours of self-directed learning. The course can be completed in one full day or over two half-days within a two-week period.

Gateway CERH is open to arranging special sessions for businesses wanting to train multiple employees. This flexibility ensures that all our Chamber members can participate and benefit from the training, tailored to their scheduling needs.

Join Us to Make a Difference

We encourage all Chamber members to consider enrolling in the MHFA course. The Huron Chamber of Commerce fully supports and promotes this beneficial program as part of our mission to enhance the health and quality of life in our community. Let’s take this step together to strengthen our community’s capacity to manage mental health proactively and compassionately.
