Municipal Election Hub Adds Candidate Websites and Social Media Links

The Huron Chamber of Commerce has added candidate websites and social media links to its 2026 Municipal Election Hub, giving voters a more direct way to learn about the people seeking municipal office across Huron County. Municipal election information is often spread across multiple websites, social media platforms and community pages. The Chamber’s Municipal Election Hub is intended to bring that information together in one place, making it easier for residents to identify the candidates in their municipality, find official election information and connect directly with candidate campaign materials.

The U.S. has moved to restrict Canadian-origin products in federal civilian procurement, opening another front in the bilateral trade dispute. Canada, meanwhile, has proposed a major expansion of immediate tax deductions for business investment and is discussing substantially deeper economic integration with the European Union. Canadian exporters are also preparing for September 29, when U.S. import prohibitions are scheduled to take effect on selected Canadian alcohol, dairy and motor vehicle products.

This week’s Municipal Matters highlights new business and development activity in Bluewater and Central Huron, a proposed Innovation Hub at REACH Huron, and several Huron County economic development initiatives, including Summer Company and Succession Ontario. Procurement and trade are also prominent, with Buy Ontario policies and Syfilco’s call for Canadian-made infrastructure products appearing on multiple agendas. South Huron is also considering concerns over rising OPP policing costs. North Huron will consider infrastructure funding and land.

The U.S. is revising its Section 338 tariffs on Canadian goods September 15, including the locally significant removal of salt and Portland cement from the 50 per cent tariff lists. Selected Canadian alcohol, dairy and motor vehicle products face U.S. import prohibitions beginning September 29. The Huron Chamber has also released a new 80-page Consolidated Canada-U.S. Trade War and Tariff Guide, while expanded FedDev Ontario tariff-response assistance is now available to eligible southern Ontario businesses.

Candidate Conversations Schedule Now Set

The Huron Chamber of Commerce has finalized six Candidate Conversations events across Huron County. Each evening will begin with a moderated conversation featuring candidates seeking positions that also represent their municipality at Huron County Council, followed by Candidate Connections, an informal meet-and-greet open to all municipal candidates. Events run from September 9 to October 7. Residents can also submit questions or topics in advance through the Chamber’s Candidate Conversations page to help shape the discussions.

Canada’s latest counter-tariffs on U.S. goods are now in effect, applying rates of 15, 25 and 50 per cent to approximately $27.6 billion in imports. New CBSA guidance explains how the surtaxes apply to U.S.-origin goods, shipments already in transit, low-value imports and CARM declarations. Meanwhile, Statistics Canada reports a sharp decline in exports to the U.S. alongside record exports to other markets, as Canadian businesses increasingly pursue trade diversification.

Canada’s trade dispute with the United States entered a new phase this week as Ottawa finalized $27.6 billion in counter-tariffs, expanded federal tariff-response financing and broadened EDC support for exporters. New Statistics Canada data also show tariffs continuing to affect business costs, particularly in manufacturing, transportation and wholesale trade. Canada’s new counter-tariffs take effect September 8, while several enhanced business-support programs begin rolling out in September. Businesses should review the latest programs and tariff lists.

The resources arrive as new U.S. tariffs take effect and Canada prepares matching counter-tariffs on American imports.
