The Four County Labour Market Planning Board has released its latest employment statistics, highlighting a noteworthy decrease in the unemployment rate for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region. In April, the unemployment rate dropped by 0.6 percentage points to 3.5%, marking the lowest level since November 2022. In contrast, the provincial unemployment rate saw a slight increase of 0.1 percentage point to 6.7%, both figures unadjusted for seasonality.

The region experienced positive changes across various metrics:

  • The overall population grew by 400.
  • The labour force increased by 1,000.
  • The number of individuals not participating in the labour force decreased by 600.

These changes led to a slight increase in the participation rate, which rose by 0.2 percentage points to 60.2%. Additionally, the total employment size saw a rise of approximately 2,000 jobs, driven by gains in full-time employment (+3,200) despite a loss in part-time positions (-1,200).

  • Goods-Producing Sector: Employment increased slightly by 0.2%. Notable changes include:
    • Forestry, fishing, mining, quarrying, oil, and gas: +200 jobs (+10.5%)
    • Construction: +700 jobs (+4.2%)
    • Agriculture: -1,300 jobs (-10.8%)
  • Services-Producing Sector: Employment rose by 1.9%. Key changes include:
    • Transportation and warehousing: +800 jobs (+16.0%)
    • Finance, insurance, real estate, rental, and leasing: +400 jobs (+5.0%)
    • Educational services: +300 jobs (+4.0%)
    • Professional, scientific, and technical services: -300 jobs (-4.3%)
    • Information, culture, and recreation: -100 jobs (-2.7%)
    • Accommodation and food services: -100 jobs (-1.3%)
